There are some days that I just can’t contain how I feel and what I am thinking. This is one of those days. Honestly, I am APPALLED! I know only some people will share my opinions or even part of them, but that’s okay. My goal is not to get a bunch of people to jump on my bandwagon, but to maybe reconsider some things about God and worship and life. And that those reconsiderations would cause even one person to ponder and rethink and discover and think for themselves and explore what they believe is truth about some things.
After the controversial comments made lately by some well-know people who stand in a pulpit weekly, or have a voice in this nation, I am DISTURBED! Even angered, the more I have thought about this. First of all, I am not coming against one or two people but against the flawed thinking of our culture, especially the American culture.
Sadly, in America, we tend to have lost the ability to think for ourselves and just swallow the pill we are handed without finding out WHY we are injesting it or WHAT is being handed to us! I am so very tired of this! We need to pay attention, think, and decide for ourselves, based on TRUTH and GOD’S WORD which IS THE TRUTH. (I know this statement alone will ruffle many feathers of readers out there, but that’s okay with me. Ruffled feathers should cause us to find out what has them ruffled in the first place.)
Before I go on, I will list a few of the comments that have disturbed me deeply these last few weeks.
**We worship God for ourselves.
**We worship God as our moralistic obligation.
**Worshipping God is necessary like paying our bills or doing the dishes.
** We worship for US.
** Worshipping God is something we have to do.
This “TO DO” list disturbs me…it is what many people are implying. Worshipping God is placed on the same list as feeding the dog!!!! Though we may not actually create such a list, this is how many live. I’m sorry, but I CAN’T do this. None of us HAVE TO worship God. Instead it should be an HONOR, a PRIVELEGE, a CHOICE!
I cannot imagine having the type of relationship with my husband and children in which I feel I “HAVE TO” love them and spend time with them. Can you? That is so very duty-bound.
Or that if I “check” the box beside God that all of this great stuff will happen to me and now that I have completed my checklist God will have to do _______ for me. Wow! So very shallow……
What happened to love for God and worshipping Him springing from and coming from the RELATIONSHIP?
Here’s my list……
These are not things to be checked off and marked as “done.”
These are things I GET to do! WANT to do!!! Not because I “HAVE TO” or “NEED TO!”
This list is by no means complete. It could go on and on but the heart of this list is quite different. God and paying my bills DO NOT belong on the same sheet of paper!
The difference is this…..the first list is compiled of things that I need to or have to do to make this TEMPORAL LIFE a bit easier. I don’t want a dirty house, a hungry dog, or angry bill collectors.
The second list is compiled of things I was CREATED to do, WANT to do, GET to do!!! All because God first loved me and I can’t help but love and worship Him in return!
It’s all about relationship and love, not duty or expectation.
“This is how God showed his love for us: God sent his only Son into the world so we might live through him. This is the kind of love we are talking about—not that we once upon a time loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as a sacrifice to clear away our sins and the damage they’ve done to our relationship with God.” (I John 4:9-10, The Message)
