Most everyone reading this may have seen the commercial that just “blew my skirt up” during the Super Bowl that aired last night. So many in their office cubicles, on the news, in the local coffee shops, and on the streets will be rehashing the Super Bowl XLIX television commercials. Most will mention the Snickers commercial with the Brady Bunch (loved it!!) to Kim K to Budweiser. All pretty amazing. I would hope so, considering the money spent to produce them!
Wanna know my favorite? The Always Pantiliners “Like a Girl” ad! Watching it last night, sitting in the same room as my 11 year old daughter, who by the way is a perfectly, confident, mix of a feminine-warrior, I wondered what she thought. What did she see in the faces of the ones making fun of how a girl ran, fought, or threw a ball? Did she see herself in the younger, confident, self-assured girls who, when asked the same questions, “Show me how to run/throw/fight like a girl,” who did just that? The little girls threw their entire beings into running, throwing, punching because they believed they could do those things “like a girl.” Only their self-image was a bit different from the former people who made girls look silly and incompetent. They saw themselves as powerful and able! (I dare you to google the ad and watch their little faces.)
I loved the confidence, assurance, determination, and strength I saw in them! Moms, dads, sisters, brothers, friends, family…..what are we doing to instill in the upcoming generation of young ladies that they can indeed do ___________ LIKE A GIRL? Are we redefining the phrase “__________ like a girl?” I hope so.
So what does it mean to “___________ like a girl?” The TV commercial used the most often heard phrases to fill in the blank with fight, run, and throw, implying many think girls are weak, silly, and unable to do any of those simple tasks without looking like a half-bleached, weak-limbed, bimbo. But KUDOS to Always for shedding light on how girls SHOULD view themselves, how they should confidently and assuredly and powerfully do those things!! And the simple reminder to the ones in the little girls’ world that can shape their view of themselves with a few simple words!! YAY Always!!
And now I must add to the commercial’s idea of “___________ like a girl!” Just a few thoughts, more along the spiritual side of life……..
- Girls can RUN with power, strength, assurance, and confidence because they are strong and able! Not only can they tear it up on a track or in a ball game or in a marathon, but girls can run the race of life not weak-limbed and silly! Girls are strong and enduring!
Hebrews 12:1-3 (CEV) Such a large crowd of witnesses is all around us! So we must get rid of everything that slows us down, especially the sin that just won’t let go. And we must be determined to run the race that is ahead of us. We must keep our eyes on Jesus, who leads us and makes our faith complete. He endured the shame of being nailed to a cross, because he knew that later on he would be glad he did. Now he is seated at the right side of God’s throne! So keep your mind on Jesus, who put up with many insults from sinners. Then you won’t get discouraged and give up.
- Girls can FIGHT hard and well! These times call for girls to be able to stand their ground, be aware, and fight when needed. They do need training and mentoring and encouraging from US, the ones who have gone before and walked where they do today, those of us who are still IN the fight.
- Girls can run, fight, throw, DO ANYTHING they need to because of ONE truth….
II Peter 1:3 (TLB) For as you know him better, he will give you, through his great power, everything you need for living a truly good life: he even shares his own glory and his own goodness with us!
